Reading the "Where would you live" thread got me wondering what a typical house costs in the different areas around the country.

In this morning's paper it was reported that my county's Median housing cost has now hit over $613,000. xflash

And we're not talking about big huge fancy houses either! These are 3 bedroom 2 bath homes with hardly any backyard and your neighbor's house is a few feet away. It makes me wonder who can afford a house in this area with those kind of prices.

So what's it like in your neck of the wood's?x:-/

That house in suburbs Central PA would probably sell in the 180k range....if it was brand spankin' new...probably into the 250's. The city properties are much cheaper.

Around $180,000 in the Portland-Metro area. Plus the highest gas prices in the nation, right now. x:-(

I bought my condo (1500 sq feet, one car garage, two bedrooms, 2 1/2 bathrooms) for $98,900 a year ago. It was appraised at $102,900 at that time and since then my county has said it's worth even more (don't remember exactly what the property tax statements said though). My next door neighbors just sold their condo (identical to mine) for $120,000. I'm tickled pink about it! x:)

For the privilege of living in SE Ohio (part of the Appalachian region) we can purchase homes in the median range of $63,400. My kids moved to the Carolinas and are constantly amazed when they scan the classifieds in the hometown newspaper. (Both are homeowners) For example, my husband and I - and the dog - live in a five bedroom, four bath house that sits on about 1.5 acres. We bought it about eight years ago for $175,000, expensive because of the neighborhood. My daughter has a three bedroom 2.5 bath home on a postage stamp lot that set them back over $250K. Life is good.

In Riverside City, the market for a older, good condition 2br/1ba like I have , is $200-215k range.

In West Bend, WI, the median value of all housing stock just went over $160,000 this year. New, three BR, 2 Bath on a city lot starts at about $190,000. Gas: $2.18/regular

In Hunterdon County NJ a 3BR/2ba house would go for about $385K to $400K (or more if you wanted property with it). If you could find one. These days it's all 4-6 BR "McMansions" being built, starting much much higher.

MA is very high. Its probably around 350-400K for a one family in the suburbs, one can pay up to a million for a 2-3 bedroom condo in Boston.

Have 2,400 square foot home in Phoenix suburb of Mesa on a quarter acre worth upwards of $260,000. In other ritzier suburbs (Scottsdale, Fountain Hills, Paradise Valley) it could get another $75 - 100 grand. Gas? Just went up again...$2.25.

Things are going up like crazy right now. I paid 117 6 years ago and comprables are now close to 200K, but I aint going anywhere. .especially now that I have new carpet, hard wood floors and the French doors I have always wanted. .and the new roof I didn't want. x:D

We have yet to break 2 per gallon but imagine it is only days away.

San Diego County - high $500,000's. Gas 2.27 at the cheapest station.

We have one of the lowest housing costs in the country. The average used home is $85,000. A nice 3 bedroom, 2 bath new home on a 1/2 acre lot might go for $125,000 tops. Most top end houses - 4000 sq ft - go for $350 - 400,000.

Central CA - 2300 sq ft 4bed 2 1/2 bath good size lot bought new 9/99 for 290,000 if to sell today $540,000.
Great area to live but commute to Silicon Valley
everyday min. 1 hr each way.

Here in Central Missouri a 3 bedroom, 2 bath, approx, 2,000 sq. ft., spec. home with a small lot in a decent neighborhood will go for $180 to $200.
It amazes me that I pay more for my personal property tax now than I did for my apartment rent 25 years ago. Regular Gas is $1.959 today.... Emphasis on today.

In Central New Hampshire very modest homes go for a minimum of $200,000. Property prices have doubled in the past 2 years so I'd hate to be in the market to buy right now.

I had bought it in the late 80's for $18,000. We just had our house in Lakeville, MA appraised (and an offer made) for $400,000 - it is a 1930's cottage: one bedroom, one bathroom with stall shower, living room and kitchen. One acre of land and 100" of pond shore. The sad thing is, if we sold we wouldn't be able to buy anything for that price. (forgot to mention - dirt road and we get to haul our own trash).

DeidreFR5: If you'd like to get out of Tax-achusetts and move to beautiful central NH...live in a small town with major shopping within 15-30 minutes drive, do I have a house for you!!!

I live in a 2-yr-old Colonial on 2.2 acres with 3 BR, 3 bath, 2-car garage. Skiing is about 45 minutes away, ocean beach 1 hour, Boston 1.5 hours, Maine 1/2 hour, Massachusetts 45 minutes. Cats and appliances optional...

Call me...we'll do lunch x;-)

Man - sounds like the place to be is either the midwest, Ray's neighborhood or AZ... Can't afford it anywhere else.

Outskirts of Phoenix, you can build a 2400 sq ft home for around $180k. We built ours five years ago for $132k. 'Course most homes here are built with styrofoam, chicken wire and stucco wrapped around a wood frame. They wouldn't last through one "real" winter season.

My house has weathered many a north eastern winter. It was a barn built probably between 1860 and 1880 and converted to a house in 1920. When remodeling the bathroom years ago, I pulled out insulation - newspapers dated 1920.

Yep, I heard they used to use newspaper for other things in their bathrooms too.
