Zig Ziglar

Went to my first Zig Ziglar seminar yesterday. I love him! I need input and motivation every now and then, don't we all, and he does it for me. His set of tapes was $749, EGADS! I think I'll be checking for them at the local library or used book store.

Anybody else listen to motivational tapes or books on tape in their vehicles? If so, what's your favorite?

• Yes. George Carlin, George Jones and BB King. They're a helluva lot cheaper than Zig Zag's tapes. The inspiration is probably better too.
• I'm wondering the same thing.
• Country music - married to, among others, Tammy Wynette. Their split up spawned perhaps one of her most well known songs D-I-V-O-R-C-E. I thought he'd passed on, but maybe I'm wrong....
• You guys are breakin' my heart! George was once married to Tammy Wynette, and together they were arguably the best country duet ever. George, who now claims to be mostly sober, in 50 years grew to the age of 150 due to his carousing, druggin' and drinkin'. Listening to his philosophy, whether orally or on disc, can teach you more than any number of hucksters who go around putting on seminars and various types of medicine shows. His is the original seminar. "He stopped Lovin' Her Today" is the best all time country song. I know tons of you will snicker and poo poo country music, but the rest of us will relish it. Just writing about him makes me want to pop a top. x:-)
• Two different categories, Don. "He stopped lovin' her today" - the all-time tear jerker.

Zig Ziglar - well, he has a time and a place, too. I used to like those, including the ones by Steven Covey. They're good for some subliminal character development - at least they're positive and inspirational.

Say, didn't Tammy Wynette record "stand by your man" - the same Tammy Wynette that was married 5 times?

Philosophically speaking, one of my favorites was "These Boots are made for walkin'" - most forumdudes and forumettes won't remember - and "Satin Sheets." I don't know much country music, but in those days, we had a neighborhood establishment with a single pinball machine. Ahhhh. So glad it's history.

>Yes, Tammy AKA Wynette Pugh, a beautician, stood by her men, one at a time. Boots was by Nancy Sinatra and Sheets was by Jeannie Pruitt, I think. During my pinball days stuff in the background was 'The Lion Sleeps Tonight' and Ray Charles crooning 'Jawwwjuh".

I wasn't poo-pooing Zig. Just off on a tangent of my own. Seems those inspirational things are about like a laxative. Works for awhile and then things are back to the way they were. x:-) Maybe Margaret will use that one in her stand-up delivery.

• No motivational tapes in my car. I did wear out a set of Spanish language learning tapes though. Still nowhere near bilingual and have gotten rusty since leaving the hospitality industry.
• Motivational speakers never did much for me. I get most of motivation internally. I once had a boss give me his Zig Zigler tapes, I listen for about 20 minutes and then hit eject. My father in-law in a well know motivational speaker in the education world and I have never seen him speak. True human emotion is what motivates me and it doesn't cost me a dime.
• LAST EDITED ON 10-07-03 AT 02:28PM (CST)[p]Scott: I'll start with the disclaimer that I'm not trying to irritate you, but you've often told us you are a Zen Buddhist. Given that, how is your motivation solely internal? And why would one avoid going to hear his father-in-law speak? Surely it would have a payoff....if only for him. Educate me.

And no, Leslie; George is very much alive. I see him twice a year at Silver Star Casino at the Choctaw reservation. It will surprise all of you to know that Jimmy Buffett treks to Tennessee annually to pheasant hunt with George and Hank Williams.
• Nope, doesn't supprise me with the exception of not allowing me to take them on a pheasant hunt in the heart of western Kansas.
• It doesn't get much better than walking the ditches or the wheat fields in Kansas for hunting pheasant - unless it is quail. I nearly have a heart attack when a covey jumps. By the way, I am the worst shot in the country. I think it is a waste for me to even load the shotgun. Oh yes, I was born in Cimarron, just a few miles from Garden City. Small world huh?
• Hey Don, I have not avoid seeing him speak, I just have not made any special effort to do so. My father in-law travels the world giving speaches but rarely close by. As far as my motivation coming from within, that is the premise of my religion. To be connected and present with ones self rather then valuing external motivations such as money, idols or words. Your comments didn't irritate me, I know they were a questions of curiosity.
• I don't get to many "motivational" seminars, but just read a two books by Ken Blanchard and Sheldon Bowles, "Gung-Ho" and "Whale Done" that are both terrific. Very light and easy reading (they each only take 2-3 hours to read). Lots of little common sense types of things that apply well to the workplace (and even personal relationships!) I gave copies to our managers and those who took the time to read them really enjoyed them.
• I don't listen to motivational tapes - I have the forum!
• Oh, MWild, you are really piling it on now, aren't you? Funny, though, I didn't see James or any of the other big wheels around to appreciate your flattery about the Forum. x;-)
• See - that's how you know I wasn't brown nosing anyone and that I sincerely meant it. x0:)
• Careful. Your halo is slipping down around your ears. x;-)
