Abbreviations

Have you every had anyone misinterpret something you abbreviated? I just had an extremely embarrassing one today, makes me want to run and hide...

I put F/U documentation...you can just imagine the phone call I received about this!

Before I tell you, I know you HR Forumites will know what it means, I hope! :-S

Yes, I completely understand. One of our job titles has the word Follow-up in it- We can never abbreviate this title!

I've seen that abbreviated as FLUP but that just sounds silly...

Well thank-you all for understanding what I was trying to say...I think we need to put a dictionary together for those that aren't in HR, an "HR Speak" manual. What do you think? Might save some embarrassment and explanations later on!

My favorite incorrect abbreviation is "Ass." I have met a lot of Assistants who are Ass.'s, however. I've seen this abbreviation on resumes, apps, etc. Is that OK to put in here? x;-)

Ever see the movie "Dave" with Kevin Kline? The Secret Service referred to president and first lady using the following acronyms;
POTUS - President Of The United States
FLOTUS - First Lady Of The United States

My daughter goes to a Christian school, and for the younger kids the top grade is S for satisfactory, followed by I for improving and N for needs improvement. Unfortunately, that spells SIN. So the report cards list it as SNI, which is confusing for us already-befuddled parents.

This has nothing to do with abbreviations, but reading about SIN brought it to mind. Our bishop had a great story of the first time he visited a Nantucket chapel - from the alter the stain glass says "Go and Sin More". The "No" gets covered when they open the windows.

Not an abbreviation, but a contraction that I almost put into an e-mail today...for He will, I almost put He'll. Sort of goes with the SIN post!

I was at a dinner party and someone asked me what a did for a living. I said HR. She looked at me funny and said maybe you could help my husband. I said is he looking for a new job. She said no but he needs a little replaced on the top. I then looked at her funny. Apparently there is a place in Albany that is called HR Specialist and it stands for hair replacement. Who knew?
