What lines from songs have you heard, or thought yourself, was something other than what it really was??

My husband told me a funny one recently that his friend thought for a long time...

I'm the King I wish for bacon ... (I'm the King of wishful thinking)

and not that the words changed in sound, but my innocent mother thought:

Knights in white satin ... (nights in white satin)
She always pictured a Knight in full armor, wearing white satin on a horse!

I confess, I must have been listening to the same cheap radio your mother was, as I too heard this in the lyric! And with a romantic imagination, I too saw that same flowing Knight in armor and satin.

When we first heard the song "Postman" in the mid-60s, which went "As I write this letter, send my love to you...," my sister was adament that the singer sang, "As I ride the saddle...." All of which says a lot about the quality of sound systems in those days, I think.

Could have been, couldn't it?? I don't remember the name of the artist, but I know the line of the song.

One other I remembered from my youth...The Go Go's "our lips are sealed".
I always thought it was some kind of exclaimation..."Abbacaseal" or something to that effect!

There, I said it...whew, that felt better. I guess we should attribute it to bad radios!

When my niece was very young, she used to maul the lyrics to the Jim Croce song, Bad Bad Leroy Brown. There's a line in the song, "he's got a .32 gun in his pocket for fun, he's got a razor in his shoe." My niece was always puzzled about why he had a "raisin" in his shoe.

A college friend of mine was always confused on song lyrics. For example: from the song "Hey, Jealousy" by the Gin Blossoms there is a line that states "you see, I'm in no shape for drivin'" and she would always sing, "you see, I'm no sheep or dragon."

The Capitol Steps, the Washington DC group that lampoons politicians in song, had "Secret Asian Man" in their repertoire a few years ago - during the time Bill Clinton's fundraising among the Chinese was in the news. John Huang was the Secret Asian Man.

Speaking of bacon, my ex-husband thought the line in the Jerry Lee Lewis song, "We ain't fakin', whole lotta shakin' goin' on" was actually "We eat bacon, whole lotta shakin' goin' on." Go figure.

A Sunday School song from the days when I reckon I might have been 5 or 6,was Jesus Loves Me. My mother says that one day after church I asked her "What's a Sino?" Upon questioning me, she found out we had sung the song that day and the verse was actually, "Jesus loves me this I know." "Sino" indeed! That was the same year I told her I had decided I wanted to go to Heaven as soon as the teacher confirmed that you do NOT have to eat turnip greens in Heaven if you don't want to.

which I heard as:

Sure. Ask any Oregonian. The Kingsmen were from Portland and "Louie Louie" is sort of unofficially considered the state song.

...it was The Rascals, and they even did a television special on the Leslie Gore show once (way back when) where they sang the song exactly that way--"...you and me and LESLIE".

It was indeed the Rascals - and Leslie Gore. Y'know, "It's my party and I'll cry if I want to." People used to sing her songs to me all the time on my birthday. It doesn't happen much any more, because everybody I'm around seems younger than me and they don't have a clue who she is!

Actually I'm 99% sure that they do sing "you and me and Leslie" in that song. I think it was one of the producers girlfriends or his wife or something. Don't ask me how I know, I'm cursed with possessing useless trivial information. I'm going to have to check on this now to be sure though.

I don't know... after reading the Rascals threads, I actually pulled out the CD and listened to Groovin' - twice. Sure sounds like "you and me endlessly" to me.

Ok, let's get logical here. Maybe everybody's right. After all, if you break it down, the lip movements and tongue positions are virtually identical to each other. You form the single word "end-lessly" in the same manner you would form the words "and Leslie." See? Now, wasn't that easy? x:-) Moreover, I think one of the vocalists for the Rascals was Canadian and their English pronunciation is different from Americans, so the mistake could be easily made. And before all the Canadians start to beat me up with their maple leaves, I just want to point out that my parents were Canadian.
