Been gone since last Thursday (NASCAR in Vegas - yeeha!) the HR director is gone, I'm next in line, and my in basket is full. The above was my first thought this morning.
One of the lines I always think to myself when I have a distressed employee who has been offended by an insensitive manager in my office comes from the British television comedy "Fawlty Towers" starring John Cleese.
Set up: A family from Germany are staying at the hotel and Mr. Fawlty is trying to accomidate them. (he has suffered a head injury and fled from the hospital, so he is not thinking too clearly) He has already offended the Germans greatly by slipping up and talking about WWII.
Mr. Fawlty whispers to one of his staff while the germans are in the dining room upset and crying "Don't mention the war! I mentioned it once or twice, but I think I got away with it!"
I LOVE Fawlty Towers! My parents introduced me and my sister to these comedies when we were kids.
My favorite line (if I had to choose just one) would be when Basil Fawlty's wife Cybil is on the phone to one of her girlfriends and keeps saying "Oh, I know" over and over again. Basil gets upset with the blabbering and shouts "WELL IF YOU KNOW, THEN WHY IS SHE TELLING YOU!" and storms out of the room.
Lines from that show make me LOL all the time, thanks for reminding me of how funny that show is, I think I will have to break out the taped shows this weekend and have a marathon!
Great idea. We were lucky enough to catch a marathon of the Faulty Towers shows on one network and recorded every episode in the order they were aired. Makes for a great evening of TV. My wife does not care for Monty Phython, but she really enjoys Faulty Towers. Enjoy.......
Leslie, that is impressive, although I'm a little concerned at the same time. I don't even know if the people that were in Canadian Bacon want to remember that movie. Wasn't that with the late, great John Candy?
I can take this one. His feature debut was in To Kill a Mockingbird as Boo Radley. I don't recall him having any lines at all. I just remember him standing up against a wall.

"You wanna play ruff? O.K. Say hello to my little friend"
Scarface -Al Pacino (I just love that movie)
I think of this every time a supervisor walks into my office and closes the door behind them.

"Why oh why (D I D) I take two blue pills?" Don D. (personal)
To express the most insincere mock sympathy: "Poor, poor Linda Kasabian" (with bowed head) -- from Helter Skelter
When an employee can't have what they've asked for: "Now, how about a Fresca?" -- from Caddyshack
I'm also frequently asking people to "turn it up to 11" when I need more effort. (Spinal Tap references are second only to Monty Python, in my book!)

"We are men of action; lies do not become us."
And another, that comes up a lot around here, is Inigo's response to Fezini's continued exclamations of "Inconceivable!":
"You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means."
But my favorites are from Casablanca:
"I am shocked -- shocked! -- to find that (fill in the blank) is going on in here."
"Round up the usual suspects."
And from Silverado:
"Mister, you got a lot to learn about people."
...and one I use with my kids,
"I don't want to kill you, and you don't wanna be dead."

Quick! No research, now -- How many lines did Robert Duvall have in his feature motion picture debut, and what were they?
Don't know what you've won, you'll have to check with Leslie at the casino, I guess.
