bereavement leave

We are in the process of reviewing our Bereavement Leave policy. Currently, our policy states three days of bereavement leave will be granted for employee's immediate family (spouse/equivalent, parent, child, stepchild, sibling, grandparent, grandchild; or the employee's spouse's parent). 1 day of leave will be granted for the purpose of attending a funeral of a non-immediately family member. We have had several inquiries as to "brother -in-law; sister-in-law", etc. as we only allow for 1 day of bereavement pay. If anyone would be willing to share their policy, I would really appreciate it.Thanks!

  • We have the following time allowed:
Parents, spouse, child(ren)-- up to 5 days
Brother, sister, in-laws (parental, sibling)-- up to 3 days
Grandparent, in-law grandparent -- up to 2 days
Aunts, uncles, cousins -- up to 1 day.

If more time is needed, the employee is required to use their vacation time.
  • We too are looking at revising our Bereavement Policy (Funeral Pay). Our current policy is listed below:
Bereavement Policy allows paid time off for you to attend the funeral of a family member. Family members included are: spouse, children, parents, brothers, sisters, grandparents, grandchildren. Step children, step parents and step brothers and sisters are also covered as are mother in-law and father in-law. You may require only a partial day or a full day to attend the funeral; however your supervisor must pre-approve all paid bereavement time. If you require only a partial day, you will be paid your scheduled time missed. If it is absolutely necessary, such as for extended travel time your Supervisor can approve up to three days off with pay. If additional time off is needed, please work this out with your supervisor; however, the most that will be paid is three days. With your Supervisors’ approval, you may use available vacation time if additional time off is required.
    Good luck,

  • Whatever policy you adopt, make sure the leave specifies it is for the purpose of attending the funeral. You do not want to say 3 days bereavement leave and have an employee ask for leave three months later because his mother died. Also, I suggest if you provide leave for funeral of in-laws it be restricted to "current" in laws. Others should get much less time off. They can always use vacation or personal time.
  • Regular fulltime employees are granted up to three consecutive work days (24 hours) funeral leave with pay upon the death of their spouse, child, stepchild, grandchild, parent, stepparten, grandparent, brother or sister by blood or marriage.
  • Spouse, child, parent, sister, brother (step relations of same kind) or person who is a member of and living in household = 5 days,
Grandparent, grandchild, mother-, father-, brother-, sister-, son- or daughter-in-law = 2 days,
Aunt, uncle, niece, nephew or cousin = 1
Friends and other relatives = 4 hours
Add 1 day is travel of 250 miles or more is involved.
  • Dutch: Don't confuse bereavement leave with 'funeral pay' as you did in your post. More and more families are not having funerals. Stick with bereavement.

Our policy firmly states three days up to and including the day of the funeral or memorial service. You all can imagine the number of employees who want to pick and choose when in the future those days will be. It is not an entitlement. It is a gift from the employer in recognition of a grieving process. Make no more of it.
  • I don't like ours but here it is...
Up to 3 days pay covering time lost from regularly assigned days in order to make funeral arrangements and attend the funeral. Immediate family sall include only: Spouse, Parent, Child Brother/Sister, Step parent, Step Child. One day will be granted upon the dath of the following: Grandparents, Grandchildren, Parent In law, Brother/Sister in law. Days lost qualify for pay reimbursement only if they are regularly scheduled day of work preceding and including the day of burial. In the period of absence including non-working and/or non-scheduled work day, compensation for the absence shall not be provided for those non- scheduled work days.
(What this means is from the day of death through the funeral up to 1 or 3 days depending upon death. It it was grandparent who died on Sat. and funeral on Monday... you could decide that there are 2 days and you will only grant one which is Sat. or that you would grant one either Sat., Sun, or Monday.) If it is spouse who died on Monday and funeral isn't till Friday, they would get 3 days, between Monday and Friday... even if out 5.) Anyway, it is messy.

  • According to your policy, if my mother dies and we have her cremated, I get no time off.
