Required health insurance coverage

Can an employer require that employees have health insurance coverage either through the company-sponsored plan or individually?

  • We used to. Employees were automatically signed up for individual coverage (and paid the employee portion) if they didn't elect coverage or provide proof that they were covered under another policy. We made it a condition of employment, but didn't manadate that the coverage had to be with us.

    Explain it like this. We want to make sure that if any of our employees are hurt or sick that they will be cared for. The only way we can be sure that no emergency room will turn them away is to make sure they have insurance of some kind. We don't care if it's with us. We just want to be sure you're going to be okay.
