Tatoo's and Body Piercing

I am looking for policies on these issues. Should anyone be willing to share I would be greatly appreciated. Comments would be great as well.

Our organization is healthcare and our employees, in virtually all departments, deal with the general public.

  • We are also researching this situation. Our concern is applying the policy to employees who already have tatoos and/or body piercing. We cannot prevent the act, but we do feel it should not be evident/visible at work.


  • We are a retirement facility. Needless to say, many of our residents feel strongly that tattoos and body piercing are repulsive. Our nursing and dietary departments require that tattoos be covered if possible. We do not have a facility-wide policy on tattoos, because some of our best employees have them. In our "Personal Appearance" policy, I stated that "Employees have the right to personal expression; however, body piercing other than ear piercing should be removed or covered while at work."
