Employee use of the internet at work

I would like to know how others handle employees using the internet, e-mail, etc at work. Do you have a special policy posted of in the handbook?

We have a specific policy on computer hardware/software usage and internet/e-mail usage. It state that employees should not expect privacy on their County owned computers and that personal use is prohibited.

Each employee is required to sign the policy prior to gaining access to a County computer.

It has served us well.

Just wanted to weigh in with a different position. Our company also specifically states in policy that all company provided equipment may be accessed by the company at any time, and that employees should not expect privacy in any material they keep at the office or on company computers. However, we do allow limited personal use of computers and the internet. We even sent employees a list of web-based email providers so they could prevent personal messages from being accessible by the company if they chose.

a point to remember...if you fire someone for internet abuse or email abuse...DO NOT go to their computer and access it...if so,the computer shows you accessed it and the employee's lawyer will argue that you planted the "evidence" that led to the firing...instead,establish a chain of custody,hire a third party consultant to take custody of the hard drive,and do not let your internal computer guys fool with the computer---you must preserve the evidence...mike maslanka
