Reduced work hours and vacation time

If a company, as a result of economic reasons, needs to reduce work hours for its employees, are the employees allowed to use accrued vacation hours to make up for the lost time?

Some companies let workers use up leave to cover time. They reduce liabilities, help handle slow work periods, and still keep the money coming for employees. If, however, you decide that a work week is 32 hours, then having an employee try to use 8 hours of leave to make it 40 would be like having a worker try to use 8 on a 40 hour work week to make it 48.

That being said, you are in the People's Republic of California. I suggest you call the California Department of Labor and ask them.

    Good luck!

I see this site just came out with a white paper on RIF's. It might have the answers you need. Here is a link.
