Disaster Pay

We are reviewing our disaster plan and I am trying to determine a maximum amount of time that would be paid to an employee if the work place was unavailable to work or if alternative work sites weren't set up yet.

We had a recent devastating ice storm that left us without power for over a week. We paid staff for one week, but we are looking at our plan to determine if it was longer would we be able to pay them. Just wondering if other agencies had a limit set that they would pay.

  • As a public employer, we do not pay employees for absences due to inclement weather or similar situations. The only exception is if we cease operations and send employees home, those employees get paid for the remainder of their shift. Employees may use their leave accruals to cover absences.

However, we also had severe ice storms a few years back that curtailed operations for several days. Our governor, by Executive Order, continued pay for State employees. Not sure how long he would have continued pay if the inclement weather lasted more than 2-3 days.
