Recoupong Bonus Pay

We paid an employee a bonus and now the supervisor wants it taken back. The bonus was paid on productivity and now the employee is not showing up to work when scheduled and the supervisor wants the bonus taken back. Your thoughts?

I don't see the connection. The bonus was apparently paid for prior contributions to the organization. The subsequent behavior problem should be dealt with according to your disciplinary policy. Besides making no sense to do so, it would not be legal to ding his paycheck to recover a bonus.

I concurr! However, that does not stop the supervisor from exercising his responsibility for performance issues in the future. If the employee concurs with the supervisor and wanted to give it back, then you could have the ability to set up an accounts payable file and allow the employee to pay it back over time. I would make sure I had this entire action well documented and discussed. The employee may realize that his "butt is on the line and not entitled to a production bonus", thus this action could from his view be the right thing to do. I doubt it,but! In our bonus program, performance issues can knock someone out of a production bonus, with these words in our bonus program, the above procedure does allow for the payback, but not on the whem of the supervisor. The department manager approves all bonus awards prior to cutting the checks, therefore, a supervisor can not come in after the award has taken place and take the bonus production bonus back.
