How do we pay?

Need a quick answer, please! Two exempt salaried employees and one non-exempt hourly employee from our purchasing department went voluntarily to a plant in Indiana to gain product and vendor knowledge. They left Wednesday morning and returned Saturday. The co. paid for the plane tickets, food and lodging. What are our obligations for wages? The non-exempt guy usually does 4 or 5 10-hour days.

  • You would owe the one non-exempt employee for his normal hours worked for a 40 hour work week through Thursday and overtime hours for the time worked on Friday and travel time on Saturday. If an employee regular works from 8am to 5pm from Monday to Friday the travel time during these hours is "worktime" on Saturday and Sunday. In your case, it would appear that your employee must be given credit for a normal 10 hour work day for Friday and Saturday and paid as overtime. 785.33 to 785.40.

This information is from the old sections of FLSA, which I do not believe were changed. Hope trhis helps!
