Payroll Deductions for Company Expenses

I have two questions pertaining to Maryland law:
Are employers permitted to deduct from an employee's pay the cost of an item purchased for an employee at employee's request on a company account without authorization in writing?
Is an email message sufficient when the law says "expressly authorized in writing by the employee" with no other instructions?
Thank you for any help!

You need the authorization in writing, contermporaneously dated and specific as to description and amount.
