State Unemployment

We have an employee who has lived in Minnesota until this past week. He has now moved to Wisconsin. We have already paid the maximum unemployment for this ee to the State of Minnesota. Do you now have to pay Wisconsin also? If anyone out there knows the answer to this, please respond. Thanks in advance.

  • Great question. I don't know. But you are obligated to let the new state know you have an active ee there so they can crank up your tax case. Call or email the new state's employment security system or state labor board and they will advise you. If you don't and are discovered later to have had a worker in their state, chances are that you will have to pay in arrears.
