Exempt employee working and hourly job

Do to the nursing shortage I have found several of my Nursing Managers(exempt) who are putting in extra hours to cover a shortage, over their 80, but are charging them to another job as an hourly employee. On their check they are getting paid, for example, a total of 96 hours -- 80 hours for their regular exempt position and 16 hours at another rate in a non-exempt positon.
Can an exempt employee work additional non-exempt hours and still remain exempt? My feeling is that they cannot?
Has anyone had a similar experience?
