Any thoughts about Piece Rate work? We are a manufacturing facility in AZ. Not all departments will be piece rate work just our Mill and Assembky area.
If you have piece rate work in your facility can you send me your standards on how to monitor the work. How about the pay?

  • JOHANNA 1: We have piece rate work and I hold the supervisor responsibile for maintaining a counting system that can be supported by documentation. He/she turns into the payroll clerk each Monday morning the total number of "pigs loaded last week & who by name gets credit for the loading"! Based on the number of hogs loaded which we multiply by the rate of pay for loading assigned to each employee". This rate is determined by the value provided by the company to get the hogs loaded daily in the thousands! The rates go from .025 cents per head to .05 per head to the long term and experienced employee. Your company should figure out what is the value of the act being compensated and decide who should get what rate. There is also an OVERTIME rate that you must also be aware. Should the employee accomplish his/her rate during over 40 work hours during the work week he/she is entitled to 1 1/2 for eack piece rate loaded during the O/T hour. We don't realize any overtime because the number of hogs loaded is done quickly to prevent abuse of the animals. Loading hogs is done in the early morning hours and usually 4 1/2 days a week. It could however, be a night mare if the time clock is not also used to keep a record of the time on the job! Good Luck, Pork!
