Rest and Meal Periods - State of Georgia

LAST EDITED ON 05-29-02 AT 11:35AM (CST)[p]Where is it documented (electronic or written) that there are no rest and meal period requirements for employers in the private sector for the State of Georgia?

Also, where is it documented (electronic or written) that two 15 minute rest periods and one 30 minute or 1-hour meal period is an ideal business practice?

  • A quick search in the members' area of HRhero for Georgia statutes and regulations shows no mention of rest breaks or meal breaks. I guess that's an argument from silence.

A quick search in the members' area for articles from the Georgia Employment Law Letter shows an article from February 2002 discussing FLSA requirements for compensation of rest breaks. It specifies that the FLSA does not have specific mandates for length of rest times or work times. The fact that it doesn't mention any state requirements is a good indication that there aren't any. Again, an argument from silence.

As to best practices, I'd suggest doing a search for "lunch" or "rest" in this forum. Several participants have discussed this issue.
