Exempt Employee on FMLA and STD

We have an exempt employee who just went out on FMLA leave and Short Term Disability. Our Short Term Disability plans elimination period is from day 1-30 and STD is from day 31-89. The employee doesn't have enough paid time off to get him through the first 30 days. His paid time off ends on a Monday and there would still be another 8 days before STD kicks in on the Friday of the next week. My question is, since the employee performed no work in the week, is it okay for him to be on leave without pay for the Tuesday through Friday (vacation day used on the Monday) and the following Monday through Thursday (STD begins on the Friday) since he wouldn't be receiving a full weeks pay in either of those weeks? The state is Washington. Thanks for your help.
