Travel / Training Time for Non-Exempt Staff

Please advise, a full-time non-exempt staff attended a training/workshop for two or more days, Weekend included. This person attended 3 hours of training on saturday.

How should we pay this person?
Should we pay for hours worked on weekend?
Should we pay for travel time?.

  • We've been told by our state DOL that mandated meetings and workshops scheduled on Saturdays makes it a "work day" and if that exceeds 40 hours worked in the week you must pay overtime. We've since asked folks to take a day off during the week if they are attending Saturday meetings. All expenses incurred by the employee for the sake of the employer must be reimbursed to the employee.
