payroll check postmarks

For those remote office employees who decline direct deposit, what is our obligation in terms of mailing payroll. Are we required to mail the checks with enough lead time that they reach the employee by payday or is our obligation only to postmark them by payday?

We typically mail these checks the Tuesday or Wednesday before Friday's payday but the mail is moving much slower these days and we're starting to get complaints that the checks aren't reaching the employees until after payday.

This will depend on the law of your specific state. Some states require delivery on payday. Some probably require mailing by payday.
