Time sheet record keeping

Is there a record retention guideline for keeping timesheet originals? My specific question has to do with using a third-party payroll processor. We send timesheets to this processor. Who should keep the originals on file - the payroll processor or the employer? Thank you.

From a practical standpoint, it can also be time-consuming to get them if you need original documentation for a hearing, etc.
