Salaried Exempt Employees

In the event of an unscheduled plant closure during a specified time, can a company require salaried exempt employees to take time off without pay if they do not have vacation time to cover a non-operating schedule?

An exempt employee must be paid his or her regular salary for the week in any week in which his or she works at least part of the week. No deduction from salary may be made unless the exempt employee is absent for a full day under a sick leave policy or has taken a full day of personal leave. Deductions may not be made from the exempt employee's weekly salary if the employee is ready, willing and able to work but operational or business needs don't permit him or her to work that day because the work wasn't available. Take a look at Code of Federal Regulations, volume 29, Section 541.118(a). You can find it on the web.
