HR Asst status

Those of you fortunate enough to have HR Assistants, do you classify them as exempt or non? Considering adding one here to file, process benefits & new hire paperwork. Seems to meet administrative exemption requirements, but what is the "norm?" thanks.

I currently have two (2) such positions and both of them are non-exempt. Even if you use the FSLA streamlined test, I question how you could satisfy the "customarily and regularly exercise discretion and independent judgment" requirement. Unless you give this position an incredible am't of authority, I don't see how this position could function as exempt.

I have one assistant and I have her classified as non-exempt. I agree that unless you are going to give an awful lot of authority to this person, the job does not qualify as exempt.

I called several of my client companies and they all classify HR Assistants as non-exempt. Hope that helps.

Just as an aside, job titles for Exempt positions that use Assistant as a modifier, such as Admin. Asst., and HR Asst. are red flags to W&H examiners should you ever have an audit.
