Alternate schedules

Not really a wage & hour question, but here goes. We're considering offering alternative work schedules for our "normal" 9-5, Monday - Friday employees (ie. 4 ten hr days). However, our production dept. is 24 hrs, 5 days per week and I would like to offer this company-wide. Does anyone know of alternate schedules we can offer to this department without scheduled overtime & maintaining 40 hours per week for the workers? Any examples would be appreciated.

  • We are currently piloting an alternate schedule in our company and are starting in our production area. Employees will work four ten hour shifts. Some will work Monday through Thursday and some will work Tuesday through Friday. Overtime won't kick in until employees have worked 40 hours. Any weekend work will be paid as overtime.

We plan to try this out from now until September and if it works out like we expect it to, we'll make it a permanent schedule and extend it to the rest of the company.

So far, the employees are responding very positively. They like having the extra time off!
