Bereavement Leave

Could you please share with me the number of bereavement leave days you give employees and which family members they cover. We have a fairly antiquated policy which gives 3 days for some family members and 2 for others. I'd like to simplify it and just give a flat number of days for this. Also, who does your bereavement leave cover? How far down the chain does it go for "in-law relationships?"

Thanks for your help on this!

  • Our policy:

"When a death occurs in your immediate family, your present spouse, mother, father, son, daughter, brother or sister, you will be excused for up to three consecutive days you were scheduled to work ending with the day of the funeral. In the event of the death of your mother-in-law, father-in-law, brother-in-law, sister-in-law, grandchild, stepchild, or your grandparents, you will be excused for the day of the funeral if it falls on a day you were scheduled to work. Payment will be for time lost from work for your scheduled hours up to eight hours in any one day. Full-time employees will be eligible under this provision. To qualify for the payment you may be asked to establish proof of death and relationship and that you were in attendance at the funeral. Multiple deaths will not broaden the provisions of this benefit."

    Hope this helps.
  • We use the following for Bereavement/Funeral Pay:

Bereavement Pay (Funeral Pay) allows paid time off for full-time employees to attend the funeral of a family member. Family members covered are: spouse, children, parents, brothers, sisters, grandparents, grandchildren. Step children, step parents and step brothers and sisters are also covered as are mother in- law and father in-law. You may require only a partial day or a full day to attend the funeral; however your supervisor must pre-approve all paid bereavement time. If you require only a partial day, you will be paid, for the time you were scheduled to work but missed to attend the funeral. If it is necessary, such as for extended travel time your Supervisor can approve up to three days off with pay. If additional time off is needed, please work this out with your supervisor; however, the most that will be paid is three days. With your Supervisors’ approval, you may use available vacation time if additional time off is required.

In the new and improved Handbook that is waiting for the CEO to approve, we also have part-time ee's listed as being covered.
  • FUNERAL LEAVE

    PURPOSE

To establish a policy to allow employees time off in the event of the death of family or friends while maintaining proper staffing levels to conduct business.

    SCOPE

This policy applies to all full time employees.

    DEFINITIONS

Immediate family – Individuals related by consanguinity (blood) or by affinity (marriage) to include: Spouse, children, parents, grandparents, siblings, grandchildren, aunts, uncles, nieces or nephews.

    POLICY PROVISIONS

In the event of a death of a member of an employee’s immediate family as defined above, three days absence will be permitted. For salaried employees only, the permitted absence will be with pay.

For all other deaths, the amount of time off allowed will be limited to the time of the funeral and time to travel to and from the services. This time off must be scheduled with the employee’s immediate supervisor and will be granted at the supervisor’s discretion based on work load.

Hourly non exempt or commissioned employees will not be paid for time off taken under this policy.

  • Very generous to extend it to aunts, uncles, nieces or nephews. That could result in a lot of funeral leave for some employees.
  • We allow two days of paid leave between the day of death and the date of services. This is how our policy reads:

    FUNERAL LEAVE

When funeral leave is requested, to attend the funeral and/or burial rites of an immediate family member, the employee must provide the name of the deceased and relationship on the leave request form. Two days of funeral leave are authorized and may be any two days between and including the date of death and the date of funeral service. The supervisor may also require church bulletin or other data as verification. This leave is available only to permanent and probational employees. Funeral leave will only be granted for husband/wife, father/step-father, mother/step-mother, father-in-law, mother-in-law, sister/step-sister, daughter/step-daughter, brother/step-brother, son/step-son, grandfather/mother of the employee, grandchild of the employee.

  • Yes, it is, but we are a third generation, family- owned, family-oriented business.
  • A regular, full-time or part-time employee who must be absent from work t oattend the funeral of a family member who is within the third degree of consanguinity or affinity may use up to a maximum of twenty-four hours of bereavement leave per each occurrence. Bereavement leave longer than twenty-four hours may be charged to accumulated sick leave, up to a maximum of sixteen additional hours, with the advance approval of the employer. Employees who are not full-time or regular part-time may take up to three days of bereavement leave without pay. Supervisors or managers may require evidence of attendance at the funeral.
  • Our policy is pretty generous: three days with pay for the same relationships that have already been mentioned above, with the addition that "special consideration will also be given to any other person whose association with the employee was similar to any of the above relationships".
  • We are the most generous!!!

Up to five consecutive days of lost paid time or maximum of 40 hours of pay will be granted for the death of a Mother, Father, Husband, Wife, Son, Step-son, Daughter, Step-daughter, Brother or Sister.

One day of lost paid time or maximum of 8 hours will be granted for the death of a Grandmother, Grandfather, Grandchild, Mother-in-law, Father-in-law, Aunt or Uncle for the day of the funeral only.

If additional time off is required, the employee must schedule vacation or personal days.

My Mom died not quite a year ago (in March). I could not imagine trying to do everything required for a funeral and other aspects of cleaning out her stuff in three days.
  • We give 5 days for mother, father, daughter, son, sister, brother, grand mother/father; and 3 days for aunt, uncle and mother/father-in-law; daughter/son-in-law, etc.
