References for discharged ee

A ee was discharged for work performance. The General Mgr offered to give a reference if needed.
After the ee left, he called and asked to have the GM send him the reference he offered. He also asked to have his personnel file sent to him. My question is, is it prudent to have the GM give any reference at all.

Basically, when we provide a letter, it lists dates of employment and last position held. There are times when, if the ee asks, we will include all of the positions s/he worked while employed with us. We never give pay information or address performance.

I would not send the ee his or her file. They are no longer employed and the information is proprietary.
  • A letter of reference for a "discharged" employee? Why in the world would an employer want to even go there? I definitely would not be giving a letter of reference to an ee we discharged. As to giving him a copy of his personnel file - absolutely not.
