"Emergency" PTO funds -- Who uses?

In the past, our company would send out a request for anyone wishing to donate vacation to a particular employee who was in need due to a catastropic event. It has been some time since the last request and in light of HIPPA, other privacy rights, fairness, and other considerations, I was just wondering how many of you do this for your employees and if you do not, why not?

  • If one of our EEs is in need of the catastrophic leave, the EE must make a request to our Exec Dir. In her absolute and arbitrary discretion, she will determine if the need qualifies. If it does, she will direct HR to make a general email indicating that an EE has a situation that qualifies for catastrophic leave and that any EE wishing to donate annual leave may do so. Then drects them to contact HR to donate the time.

The EE in need and the reason remain confidential. The EEs donating time remain confidential. The time comes over at the value to the donor.
  • Marc,

You noted in another post the need to value and convert the donated time. Why the need? Is this a taxable compensation issue?
