Self Insurance

Has anyone gone to self insuring their employees' health insurance benefits? Did you save money? Was it a total disaster?

If you have some pros and cons you could share, that would be great. We are looking for alternatives to our ever escalating insurance premiums which we hate to keep passing on to our employees. If there is another alternative, we'd like to know about it.

We were self-insured up until five years ago then we went to fully-funded. Being self-insured cost us more in the long run that paying a higher monthly premium. We were self-insured for nine years. We're a manufacturing company with about 200 employees on our health plan.
