Internal Transfer Policies

Help! We have an employee who is currently under a development plan who has applied for an internal transfer. The supervisor-to-be is interested and wants to hire the employee. The current supervisor has a problem allowing the employee to subvert the process and escape correcting bad behavior.

Our policy allows transfers and mentions taking the employees standing into consideration, but does not address the development plan or a transition period.

Any ideas?

  • Why is the ee under a developmental plan? Could it be that the current job is not a fit, but the new one is? Or maybe the ee and current manager have personality issues that have contributed to poor work?

I usually would say the same as the manager- don't transfer problem ee's. Most importantly, find out why he is under a plan and make sure the other manager knows what is going on.

  • Hi Nrdgrrl.

    Thanks for your input.

The ee has missed several monthly deadlines associated with her primary job and has significant tardiness issues. Yes, I think there is a personality mismatch with her current supervisor. This ee ,though young, has invested several years in a professional career choice. This transfer would be an abrupt change of direction from that choice.

The potential new supervisor has been made aware of the development plan. She is reluctant to know the information because she thinks it is confidential and she would not know it if the candidate walked off the street! I am perplexed by this attitude.
