Company Vehicles and Alcohol

We are writing a company vehicle policy and a difference of opinion has arisen regarding alcohol. (Most of the employees with company cars are sales personnel who frequently entertain customers.) The two statements being considered are:

-----no driving if any alcohol has been consumed - or
-----no driving if intoxicated

I would really appreciate input regarding what your companies are doing.

  • Our policy is no alcohol in the vehicle at any time (ie. drinking while driving or bottles in car. In regards to the consumption portion goes, no consumption is allowed during workday hours, including lunch periods. However, for those positions who possibly entertain vendors during evening hours, we allow the consumption of alcohol as long as below the legal limit. They are required to report any violations of this policy to their manager (ie. if they were cited for DUI or DWI). We also run driving checks on these positions every 6 months as a precaution to verify driving violations. If DUI or DWI is found, company vehicle benefit is forfeited. We use our liability carrier as the "scapegoat" for this. With our carrier in particular, if DUI or DWI, company car priveleges are revoked for 3 years. Too much liability on the company otherwise.
