An employee is certified for intermittent leave for her adult son who is not mentally stable and has tried to commit suicide recently. Today the employee informed me that she has to leave early to go to her son's attorney's office. Would this be excused under FMLA? I would think it would only be for doctor appointments but am not sure. Thanks.

You are correct that meeting with an attorney is not an FMLA-qualifying event.

Before an outright denial of FMLA coverage for the absence, I think I'd ask whether the purpose of her attendance to the legal visit is to stand in for her son who cannot be present or assist her son in some way by providing physical or emotional support. I think it is conceivable that an emotionally unstable dependent might require the assistance of an employee. Just a guess . . ..
