recertify for intermittent

We had an employee who went out on FML in November of last year. The form was not certified for intermittent leave. The employee has since returned from her leave of absence and now needs to take intermittent leave. I have given her a new certification form to be completed for intermittent leave. Just want to make sure that I did the right thing. Thanks.

I believe it's always a good idea to obtain a new cert for intermittent, to ensure that everyone knows the time off needs, can discuss avail options and proceed. While some employers may automatically convert the continuous leave to intermittent, we've chosen to treat it as a separate issue.

I would agree to the process described as long as you require the same in all situations.

Make sure the medical service provider gets as specific as possible regarding the nature of the intermittent leave. Frequency considerations and how long the need for intermittent leave will last. This can save you lots of headaches (not the FML kind) and confusion and will possibly cut down on abuse.
