Lost Workers Comp Carrier

Our Workers Comp carrier for our nonprofit organization (children's residential group home) went out of business and scores of others have turned us down (in Florida) for coverage. We don't have the money for state coverage. Will we be penalized for non-coverage until we find a carrier?

  • You could be subject to substantial penalties for not having workers' comp coverage for your employees. A cursory glance at Florida statutes shows a possible $5,000 penalty, a $100 per day penalty, the possibility of a stop-work order and injunction, and more. Plus, if a worker has an injury, your organization could be sued under regular tort law, which doesn't have the limits of workers' comp law.

Running your organization without workers' comp coverage just isn't an option.
