What to say?

I have an employee that continues to tell her supervisor that she is going to quit every week. She tells us that she is having pain in her back and now down her leg from the lifting. We have lightened what she needs to lift months ago. She was in my office asking for an injury report again. Any suggestions? Can we ask her to resign if she is unable to perform the duties of the job? I have tried to accomodate her as much as I can. She is asking for a part time position or help. We are unable to do that due to financial hardship. Any suggestions?

  • Has she received any medical treatment to support the claims that she is making? If not, the first thing I would do is provide her with a current job description and inform her that medical restrictions will no longer be accomodated without medical documentation. As far as her current "injury", provide her with the necessary paperwork and report it to your WC carrier. I would NOT provide accomodations for an employee absent some type of medical documentation verifying the need for such accomodation.
  • You mention that she was in your office asking for an injury report AGAIN..has this been turned in to WC? If not, I would do so pronto.
  • Previously it has been turned into WC, they have paid for previous doctor visits. She is saying that it has now travelled to her leg. She has another doctor appt today and did not come into work today. She was asked to go to another center to do work that did not require lifting, but said she was in too much pain and didn't want to work at all. I am waiting to see what the doctor has to say. Thanks for your advice.
  • With the pain traveling down her leg - has she gone to her private doctor? I had a guy think his carpel tunnel was acting up again & wanted to re-open his claim. His doctor for the carpel tunnel case is the same as his private doctor - so when he went in for his annual checkup - the employee's blood work came back as abnormal. It turns out - the reason the guy's wrists/arms hurt was due to the fact that he had cancer & the cancer had spread throughout his body & was in his bones - he was losing bone mass. Do everything the other posters suggest - but I would gently suggest to the employee that she see her own doctor for a checkup. I have two other employees that recently went in for heart surgeries complaining about pains shooting down their legs as well...
