Sun Glasses in Factory

Has anyone have a policy on wearing safety glasses with a darker tint in their factory?

We have an unwritten policy limiting sunglass tints to employees working both outside & inside but have not allowed them in the plant beyond a Tint #2 (medium version of gray). We have, however, accommodated an employee who recently had cataract surgery on a temporary basis (doctor recommended) because she works in a brightly light area.

What have you others allowed?

  • Our policy for workers in production areas, all of whom are required to wear safety glasses, is that tinted lenses are prohibited unless we have a copy of the prescription paperwork specifically stating that they are necessary for the worker and why. We pay 50% of the cost of the safety prescriptions and our insurance pays the other 50%, therefore, we can also require that the dispensary be the one we use companywide. And, we have written limitations on which frames, size requirements and cost ranges are allowed under the policy. Some will suggest that limits the employees' individuality and freedom of expression, etc. We view it differently. This is a workplace, not a fashion show. When they clock out, they are free to slip on their mirrored batman shades.
  • We also require all our workers to wear safety glasses and prohibit tinting when they are inside unless they have a doctor's note requiring the tinting. We see it as a safety hazard if they are wearing tinting.
