Thanks folks. My question was is it legal to require that employees purchase steel-toed boots if it is not an OSHA requirement but instead our plant requirement for certain jobs to have boots?
OSHA requires the employer to pay for personal protective equipment, with the exception of very personal equipment that can also be used away from work. Eyeglasses and safety shoes are the two specific items that you are not required to pay for by OSHA.
But to answer your question, yes you may have a company policy that requires safety shoes or glasses in the absence of an OSHA requirement. We also require both and pay $75 annually toward a new pair of shoes/boots. The glasses are a bit more complicated.
