Intermittent leave and disability pay

What is common practice regarding how employees are paid during their FMLA intermittent leave entitlement? Do you always require the employee to use paid time off, sick leave, other personal time, or unpaid time? Does anyone allow an employee to invoke short term disability coverage during intermittent leave (on the argument that STD covers serious health conditions)? PLEASE NOTE: In this case I'm assuming intermittent leave is one day or less at a time. THANKS.
