what constitutes a "week" for FMLA purposes

An employee works 8-5, five days a week.
If their FMLA begins on a Friday, does that count as one "week" for FMLA purposes?

I was at a seminar last Friday - attorney recommended thinking of it this way ... a full-time employee has a "bank" of 480 hours, so just subtract the lost work hours from the bank.

assuming friday is the last day of your workweek, then the employee has used 1/5 of one of the 12 weeks. count 5 days for 12 weeks or 60 days. employee has 59 days left.

Sandra_d is right on. Each EE has 480 hrs. available. If intermittent leave is certified necessary by a physician, you may record and deduct time by the hour.

Thanks everyone. I had been told that even if one hour had been taken in a week, that that counted as a "week". Thanks for the latest info.

I agree with Peyton. But either approach sounds reasonable. The whole thing boils down to fractions doesn't it, regardless of your method of fractionalizing missed time.......hours or days.
