Record Retention

Does anyone have a good detailed listing for record retention. Our Company is located in NC, and it seems that there are a lot of opinions about how long to keep project information (plans, pay-outs, correspondence, change orders, etc.).
Is there a good listing out there that covers employers legally? I would like a simple listing that shows items like Employment Applications, time sheets, etc., along with the time we are legally reguired to keep.
In other words "When to keep....when to shred" in written form. Thanks

  • Hi Nelson

We just addressed this earlier this month so a search for record retention will probably help.

The short answer is that there is no list. The reason is that each industry is different. The government might require you to keep a 'certain' record 3 years, but another law pertaining to your industry might require you to keep other records 7 years. If your 'certain' records are related, then you might need to keep them 7 too. Your best bet is to find look for industry specific laws and then go from there. It wouldn't hurt to consult an attorney who is an expert in this field.

Sorry I couldn't give you the answer you were looking for.

    Good luck!
