The race and ethnic classifications have changed for the EEO-1 Report this year. See the thread in the HR Documents section titled "EEO Self-Identify Form".
You should be just fine if you follow the new EEO-1 form. I had all of my employees self identify just to be sure I had them in the proper race/ethnic classification.
I trained our managers on the "self identify" rule not long ago. We are required to track similar info on the children enrolled in our program, and we are supposed to "visually assess" each child's race.
It was fun explaining why we can "guess" for children but have to force employees to self-identify. I just told them it's two different government agencies asking for the info and we all know how inconsistent goverment agencies can be.
They all nodded knowingly and we moved on to the next topic.
