• Only one document is required from List A. If you have the I-551 that is sufficient, you don't need an SS card.

The list of acceptable documents states one document from list A OR one document from list B AND list C.
• Yes, i do know that. I was questioning whether or not the person was supposed to possess BOTH an I-551 AND a SS card? Does anyone know? I've not dealt with this issue before. I thought they were supposed to one form or the other - not both???
• From the USCIS website:

"Form I-151 is no longer an acceptable List A document #5. However, Form I-551 remains an acceptable List A document #5. "

Since the instructions indicate you must have either 1 doc from List A or 2 docs from Lists B and C, you're OK just receiving I-551 alone and not the SS card.

If you choose to just accept the SS card, you also need to get a secondary form of ID from Lists B or C.

Hope that helps!

• Is the web site www.USCIS.gov? thanks.
• Found the site and I understand what is needed to satisfy the form. However, is this person supposed to have BOTH a SS card and the I-551 card as far as being correct to have both forms (not referring to the I-9 form).
• They have a Green Card AND a SS card? Can you verify the validity of the SS# on the US Citizenship and Immigration website

• I tried to access the site you suggested but could not. Any ideas? I didn't think a person was to have both a SS card and an Alien card???? Makes me think something is "fishy".
• Sorry, njjel, I misunderstood the original post. Yes, they are supposed to have both if they are working. All individuals residing in the US, including permanent resident aliens, must have a SSN to work and to receive certain benefits. In fact, foreign exchange students can get SS cards to work here if they satisfy certain requirements. However, when you look at the SS card, look for a few things:

1. Is it a "normal" SS card? Does it look like the one you have and not have restrictions on it? It should be issued by the SS Administration or the Department of Health and Human Services.
2. Is it a "Not Valid for Employment" SS card? These are given to foreign individuals authorized to work in the US, and need a SS card to receive certain benefits.
3. Is it a "Valid for Work Only with INS Authorization" SS card? These are issued to individuals here working on a temporary basis.

A naturalized citizen will have a resident alien (I-551) card as well as a SS card.

Hope this helps.
• Yes, that helps and I've also found the site and gotten more info. I'm now educated! Thanks all!
