I'm trying to assess all the pros and cons of keeping photocopies of the supporting documentation (drivers licenses, SS cards, etc.) with the I-9s.

Anyone here have any strong feelings about that one way or another?

If it isn't necessary to keep documentation I see no reason to do so. It takes up room and you don't really need it for anything.

We had an audit of our I-9's, I do not keep copies of the documentation and the auditors had no problem with that. Why make more work for yourself?

Agree with Irie. Also, if you have a copy and you missed something about it that an auditor found (like a SS card that states only valid with employment auth - not that you would miss that, but it's possible), then you've PROVEN to the auditor that you didn't do the I-9 correctly.
