Noncompete Agreements - Arizona

I have been in the management field for 25 years. However, I have not been involved with "noncompete agreements". I was recently asked about the legalites of their use within the State of Arizona.
A friend was asked to sign a noncompete agreement after working for a consumer show producing company for well over 6 six years. My friend is a 56 year old male who has reservations about signing and at the same time is concerned that if he doesn't sign, the company could end up terminating his employment. At 56 years of age, he does not look forward to searching for a new job.
Any insight into the legalities of noncompete agreements within the State of Arizona is much appreciated.
