energy costs

There's been a lot in the news about how consumers are dealing with increasing energy costs for their cars and homes, but there's been very little about how businesses are coping with it.

Are any of your businesses making changes because of rising energy costs? If so,what sort of changes are you making and how does it affect HR?

  • -Car pooling with a primary driver each week, who can turn in a milage request for reimbursement, if they are carrying at least 4 persons daily, who also sign the document verifying that they carpooled during that week with XXX driver.

    - shutting down diesel engines, if scheduled to idled for greater than 30 minutes.

    - shutting down all gasoline engines when stopped to deliver person or supplies(special supplies not received monthly or the items that have been used up and must be delivered before the next monthly run of supplies).

    - changed our delivery schedules from daily to three days a week and delivery of major bulk supplies by the month once a month.

    - reducing required lighting in office spaces by removing 2 bulbs out of a 4 bulb fixture. Eleminate incandescent fixtures entirely.

    - Reward ees for "thinking outside of the box" and coming up with workable and ee committed activities and actions in the work place or at home.

    - turn down the temperature on hot water heaters at work and at home.

    - mow the lawn less often, whether through contractor or at home.

    - change the office temperature to 72 degrees summer and 68 degrees winter, more or less depending on your local climate.

    I hope this will help and stemulate more ideas.
