Restrooms

Can anyone tell me if there is information on a required number of restrooms based on the number of associates at a facility. We have a very dated facility and my boss wants to permanently close one of the restrooms on the 2nd floor, which would leave us with 2 male and 2 for women on that floor. However, he wants to make sure we aren't violating some regulation or law. I can't find any information on that.

I believe the OSHA regs mention restrooms, but that's just off the top of my head. There are other folks here on the Forum much more well versed in OSHA than I am.

Your state building code may have requirements. Ours does.

You may want to call your municipality's codes section. They will tell you right off the bat. They can also advise you as to perhaps being grandfathered in to older standards depending on the age and use of your building, etc, etc.

If you have one of these huge 1910 OSHA Guides, you'll find this, not under restrooms, but under sanitation at 1910.141. There's a lot of verbage there as well as a table. For example, if you have 81-110 employees, you are required to have five water closets, 111 to 150 requires 6 and for each additional 40 employees, another one is required. Same sex use is approved only if the doors will lock.

The use of portables is not prohibited but OSHA will caution you that you still are required under the sanitation section to have appropriate hand-washing facilities in addition.
