Union Recruitment - is this legal?

We are a union facility but have a clause in our contract that allows EEs to "opt out" of the union at each contract expiration. They maintain all benefits, etc. but are not members of the union.

This AM I received complaints from several of our employees that representatives of the union came to their homes last night, uninvited, to recruit them back into the union. They came with pamphlets and asked them to sign back up for the union, all the while making promises of things that they would be able to do for them if they rejoined.

My question is whether or not this is legal?

Of course it's legal. You can sell anything door to door from vaccuum cleaners to support hose, suppositories to union membership. None of them have to match your claims that they work either.

I agree with The Don, it is legal. Of course, the ees do not have to let them in.

That's part of the union recruiter's job. Best advice to your employees is thank 'em for the info, show them the door and then throw out the literature if there is no interest.

Curious, what percentage opted out?

I'd rather have them show up at people's home's than waste time when they should be wokring. The former just ticks people off, while the latter is often seen as a welcomed break.
