Shoe Policy

I just took a high school co-op student to the emergency room because she got her foot caught in the door and hurt her toe pretty badly. She was wearing flip-flops. In your dress code do any of you address the kind of shoes that may or may not be worn? I'd like to banish flip flops and open-toe sandals for this very reason.

You bet! Your policy should be based on the appearance that you need for your work AND safety.

Yes, ours expressly prohibits open-toed shoes; specifically flip flops. Not only for safety, but also in consideration of non-flip flop wearers due to the extremely irritating noise flops make!

We don't allow open toed shoes, sandals or sneakers.

She was probably violating her school's dress code too. All of our local highschools ban open toe shoes/sandles

We banned flip flops for everyone. Then the controversy started over what constitutes flip flops. I had to actually show them the difference between flip flops that were not allowed and mules which are allowed. I think they were just trying to be difficult since we banned them. With spring coming we're going to have to put reminders in our newsletter. We tell those who have to push the book carts that they should not wear open toed shoes and that they can wear tennis shoes (they have a very informal dress code).

Glad to hear someone else had this same problem. Would you believe that one of my sites lost an entire day of work over what consititued a flip flop. I refer to the "flip flop" issue when supervisors are nit-picking

I think it depends upon her job. She may need to be wearing steel toed shoes (which aren't that expensive or ugly any more.) However, I don't think even in office atmosphere flip flops are appropriate. I do believe our policy bans these.

Our policy says no opened toe, opened heel, platform or heels higher than 1". We encourage our employees to wear tennis shoes (we are a children's long term care facility so we are very casual). We send employees home (on their time) if they show up wearing inappropriate foot wear.

We are a business office with clerical workers and we do have a shoe policy included in our dress code. No open toes, no sandals, and shoes must have a closed back as well. In other words, no slip on shoes. This ensures a professional appearance as well as safety.
