risky skirts only rule

Our restaurant has uniform requirments for each position. Is it a bad idea to require female hosts to wear skirts? The managers argument is that they are the first line of customer contact so a higher standard may be set. Servers can wear pants or skirts but do not have the same job role as hosts.

I don't think so as long as male hosts are required to wear a dress slack instead of chicanos or jeans, so that there is a similar level of dress. In my experience with dress codes for certain positions, it is important to carify what is acceptable/not acceptable. What is an acceptable length? What about denim skirts? What about the see through skirts with a slip underneath? If done correctly, you should not have a problem.

As Hr says, I don't think the implementation will be your problem so much as the administration. As long as you can articulate a reasonable business interest for the regulation, that should suffice. I suspect the rule will be more difficult to word than you imagine, and then, in addition to those concerns mentioned by HR will be the 'elegant' pant suits etc.
