Domestic Partners??

We are a California employer who must allow medical insurance for domestic partners... I am trying to find out what the requirements are and what kind of documentation we should be getting from the employee to add their "domestic partner". In looking on the web, I am seeing that it must be either same sex OR one of the "partners" must be at least 62 yrs old?? That is news to me and before I start defining that to the employees I want to make sure that is correct. Does anyone have experience in this? Would greatly appreciate your help if you do! Thanks.

I have no direct experience, but unless you are self-insured, I would work with my carrier. They probably already have this worked out and can advise you what they require, which you in turn pass on to your EEs.

I agree with Marc. Either your carrier or your third party administrator will be able to solve the riddle.

Last I heard was that same-sex couples and or opposite-sex couples in which at least one of the two are Medicare eligible must register their relationship with the state in order to be eligible.
